Description:
Eighth grade students will go on an one day field trip to Hocking Hills, once a large community of Native Americans. Admissions to Hocking Hills is free and students will have a variety of activities to choose from, such as the following:
Hiking - various distances are available depending on physical ability.
Fishing
Cave explorations
View waterfalls
Archery
Dance at the Washboard Music Festival
In chaperoned groups of 5, students will select one activity that they want to participate in. Students will borrow the free video cameras available to guests to record their adventure. Students will also take digital stills of their adventures.
Back in the classroom, students will utilize iMovie, or other software application to create a photo story detailing their adventure.
Each groups final photo story will be loaded to one Wiki, creating an online tourist guide for Hocking Hills.
Supporting research:
Coughlin(2010), describes field trips as lived learning. Shee says that students actively learn through the field experience and in the interaction generated among the students as well as between teachers and students. She further states that learning experiences confined to the classroom itself limit the opportunities for students to explore firsthand and to connect what they have been learning in the classroom to a particular place, object, or person.
Sadik(2008), says that storytelling is not new, however, digital storytelling is new. He says that digital storytelling facilitates the convergence of four student-centered learning strategies: student engagement, reflection for deep learning, project-based learning, and the effective integration of technology into instruction.
Tried & True or New & Innovative:
NI: For this assignments students will be using old technologies, video and digital cameras, in a new and innovative manner. Instead of taking picture and putting them in a album, students will use software programs to edit their video and combine their digital photos to narrate their field trip. The software will allow students to add titles and special effects to highlight portions of their movie. Finally, each groups movie will be combined in a class Wiki to create one comprehensive finished product.
